The University of Louisiana System has officially renamed the baseball field at Russo Park as Tony Robichaux Park, a tribute to the coach who shaped the program for more than two decades.
A Legend of the Game
Tony Robichaux amassed 914 victories during his tenure, guiding the Ragin’ Cajuns to 12 NCAA regional appearances, a College World Series run in 2000, and a No. 1 national ranking in 2014. His teams were known for disciplined play and a culture of excellence that extended beyond the diamond.
Colleagues recall Robichaux staying late at Russo Park to fine‑tune strategies, even though he lived only 20 minutes away. That commitment illustrated a hands‑on approach that left a lasting imprint on players and staff alike.
Funding the Future
Chris Russo, a prominent benefactor, pledged $1.225 million to the Russo Stadium Club and contributed $500,000 to the Friends of Tony Robichaux Fund. These gifts are part of a broader $5 million fundraising campaign aimed at supporting the baseball program and preserving Robichaux’s legacy.
Matt Deggs, who once played under Robichaux and later worked alongside him, described the new name as a fitting tribute to a man whose dedication defined a generation of Cajuns baseball.
The renaming ceremony not only honors a coaching legend but also underscores the continued support from the Russo family and the university community, ensuring that Robichaux’s influence endures for future players.
