University of New Hampshire Bolsters Defense with Finnish Sophomore Mikael Pulkkinen

Transfer from UCF brings international experience and defensive depth to the Wildcats

A Strategic Addition for the Wildcats

The University of New Hampshire men's soccer program revealed the signing of Mikael Pulkkinen, a sophomore defender originally from Helsinki, Finland. Pulkkinen arrives after a two‑year stint in the Finnish second tier with Käpylän Pallo, where he contributed to championship‑winning U15 and U17 sides and recorded three goals and three assists in 11 senior appearances.

Having transferred from the University of Central Florida, Pulkkinen brings a blend of collegiate experience and defensive acumen. During his freshman year at UCF he appeared in six matches, starting three, and logged time against nationally ranked opponents such as No. 23 UNC Greensboro, No. 22 Kentucky and No. 17 Marshall. In his sophomore season he logged minutes in all three season‑opening road games, including contests versus No. 6 Wake Forest and No. 23 UNC Greensboro.

Pulkkinen’s international background also includes representation at the Finland U18 level in 2022, a testament to his early promise. The move aligns with the Wildcats’ aim to deepen a back line that has been seeking additional stability, and the coaching staff views the player as a key piece in fortifying the defense for the upcoming campaign.

Coach Rich Weinrebe emphasized that Pulkkinen’s collegiate pedigree and defensive skill set complement the existing roster, noting that the player’s experience against strong competition should translate into immediate on‑field impact. The signing underscores the program’s commitment to recruiting talent that can contribute both now and in the years ahead.
