The University of Northern Colorado is set to install a new lighting system at Nottingham Field beginning next month, a move that will illuminate the Bears' home games and broaden the stadium’s schedule.
The $1.6 million project is being financed by anonymous contributors through the UNC Foundation, ensuring the upgrade does not rely on public funds.
While the lights are primarily intended for the football team, they also open the venue to television partners, with the ESPN family of networks expressing interest in broadcasting night contests.
Beyond athletics, the illumination will allow the field to host high‑school football contests, track meets, and even non‑sporting events such as weddings, expanding its role in the community.
Night Games and Community Benefits
Levi Johnson and Franky Morales, both members of the Bears roster, have voiced enthusiasm for the prospect of night games, citing heightened energy and more comfortable evening temperatures.
Darren Dunn, director of facilities, and John Kietzmann, head of athletics, oversaw the planning process, ensuring the design meets both functional and aesthetic goals.
A New Venue for Graduations and Celebrations
The first illuminated contest is slated for Saturday, August 29, 2026, when the Bears host Weber State, marking the debut of night football at Nottingham Field.
Greeley West High School traditionally uses the field for its Memorial Day weekend commencement, and this year Greeley Central will hold its graduation ceremony there, showcasing the stadium’s versatility.
The lighting upgrade also promises cooler kickoff conditions, a factor that Morales highlighted as beneficial for both players and spectators.
