University of Tennessee Introduces Smokey XII, Its First Rescue Dog Mascot

The new mascot debuted at the season opener, marking a historic shift for the Volunteers.

On September 5, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville unveiled Smokey XII, its first rescue dog mascot, at the season‑opening game in Neyland Stadium, where the energetic dog sprinted across the field alongside the Volunteers.

A New Era for the Volunteers

Smokey XII replaces Smokey XI, who retired earlier this year after a reserved temperament made him unsuitable for the mascot role, marking the first time a rescue dog has been chosen to serve as the university’s official mascot.

The search for a new mascot began in late 2025, and Dr. Zenithson Ng identified Smokey XII through the East Tennessee bluetick coonhound rescue community, highlighting the university’s partnership with local animal‑welfare groups.

Tailored training prepared the dog for the demands of the role, emphasizing the bold, courageous and outgoing personality that defined his predecessor Neyland, and the animal’s spirited performance was on full display during the Orange and White spring game and the opening matchup against Furman.

Smokey XII will celebrate a ceremonial birthday on September 10, and his debut included running with the team across the end zone and down the sidelines, a vivid illustration of the renewed vigor the Volunteers hope to bring this season.
