The University of Nebraska at Kearney women's soccer program is setting its sights on the Midwest Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship and a spot in the NCAA tournament later this year.
Head coach Rob Breton recently oversaw a preseason scrimmage against Augustana, a program that has not lost a season since 2012 and earned an NCAA tournament appearance in 2021. The physical, dominant style of Augustana offered the Lopers a rigorous test.
A second exhibition against Hastings College ended in a 0‑0 stalemate, giving the coaching staff valuable insight into the team's ability to close out games and maintain possession under pressure.
Building Toward the First Official Match
Breton emphasized that the two scrimmages helped the squad identify strengths and pinpoint problems, especially in handling physical play and finishing chances. The lessons learned will be applied as the team shifts focus to its opening contest.
Next Friday, UNK will step onto the field for its first official game of the season against Rockhurst University. The matchup marks a new chapter for the Lopers, who hope the preparation they have undergone will translate into a strong start.
With the season still ahead, the team remains focused on refining tactics, building chemistry, and ultimately competing for the MIAA title. A successful campaign could also secure a coveted NCAA tournament berth, a goal that has driven the program throughout the offseason.
