Coach Josh Pastner stepped in to set the record straight, saying the team is not for sale and that his earlier suggestion that donors could “own” the program was intended to draw attention to the growing financial demands of college athletics.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Pastner explained that the program’s future depends on sustained investment in facilities, coaching staff and student‑athlete support, rather than a change of ownership.
He emphasized that the Rebels belong to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, its students, alumni, fans and the broader Southern Nevada community, reinforcing that any discussion of resources is about strengthening that shared ownership.
University officials have echoed the coach’s stance, noting that the program will continue to be guided by UNLV’s strategic priorities and that no sale is being considered.
