UNT Women’s Basketball Bolsters Coaching Roster with Yannick Denson

The university taps an experienced strategist to elevate defensive schemes and player development.

The University of North Texas announced this week that Yannick Denson will join the Mean Green women's basketball staff as an associate coach, a move that underscores the program's ambition to compete at the highest level of collegiate athletics.

A Proven Architect of Defensive Excellence

Denson arrives after a stint at Abilene Christian University where he helped reshape the team's defensive identity, contributing to a 24‑win season and a run to the Super 16 of the Women's National Invitation Tournament. His ability to tighten opposition scoring margins was a key factor in the program's rise.

Beyond X's and O's, Denson has a track record of cultivating talent. Under his guidance, Payton Hull earned WAC Player of the Year honors, and the coaching staff produced several single‑season program records, illustrating his knack for player development.

His coaching journey began on the sidelines of high schools in Texas, where he led Legacy Christian Academy to a 57‑11 record and a state championship in 2017. He later refined his craft at the College of Charleston, where the team posted back‑to‑back 18‑win seasons, before taking the helm at Howard Payne University, guiding those squads to 32 cumulative victories and consistent conference tournament appearances.

Denson's early exposure to elite talent continued when he mentored Alexis Morris, a McDonald's All‑American who was selected 22nd overall in the 2023 WNBA Draft. The experience, he says, reinforced his belief in preparing athletes for the next stage of competition.

Head coach Jason Burton expressed confidence that Denson's strategic insights will complement the existing staff, noting, “His defensive acumen and recruiting connections align perfectly with our vision for sustained growth.” The university hopes the new addition will translate into more wins and deeper postseason runs for the Mean Green.
