A Strategic Leap for Pitt and UPMC
Pitt Athletics and UPMC announced this week that their partnership will now be visible on the football field, where a UPMC logo will appear on the Panthers’ jerseys beginning with the season opener against Miami (Ohio) on September 5. The visual cue marks the first time the health system’s branding will be stitched onto the team’s apparel.
Beyond the jersey, UPMC has been named the presenting sponsor of Panther women’s sports, a role that comes with a comprehensive women’s health platform. The platform will deliver interactive community programs, health screenings and awareness campaigns that aim to educate fans and athletes alike about heart health, mental wellness and preventive care.
The collaboration also extends to the newly opened Victory Heights Arena and the adjacent Sports Performance Center, both of which opened in August. Premium signage throughout the venue will showcase the UPMC name, reinforcing the system’s integration with the university’s athletic facilities.
Central to the partnership is a series of health initiatives that will be driven by Pitt’s women student‑athletes. University officials, including C. Allen Greene and MaCalus Hogan, MD, MBA, highlighted the strategic importance of the expanded alliance, noting that these athletes will serve as role models and influencers, sharing personal stories and leading workshops that encourage peers and local residents to adopt healthier lifestyles.
The agreement builds on a relationship that dates back to 1986, when Pitt named UPMC its Official Health Care Provider and Lead Partner. Over the decades the two entities have deepened their ties, and the latest expansion reflects a shared commitment to community well‑being and educational outreach.
JMI Sports, the marketing firm that manages Pitt’s athletic promotions, worked with both Pitt Athletics and UPMC to craft a multimedia framework that amplifies the partnership’s reach across television, digital and on‑site experiences.
