USA Baseball has officially taken over the management of BBCOR bat certification from the NCAA, marking a structural shift in how the sport’s equipment standards are administered.
Unified Certification Framework
The performance specifications for BBCOR bats will remain unchanged, but the bats will now carry a new USA BBCOR sticker to indicate compliance. Existing BBCOR‑approved bats stay legal until December 31, 2028, after which only USA‑certified bats will be permitted.
Manufacturers are slated to release USA BBCOR‑certified models by July 2027, giving players and programs ample time to transition. From January 1, 2029, every compliant bat must display the USA BBCOR mark, ensuring a single national standard for certification, testing, and ongoing oversight.
The move builds on the USABat program, launched in 2018 to govern youth bats with age‑appropriate weight allowances. While BBCOR bats require a drop‑3 ratio, USABats permit a drop‑6 ratio, allowing younger hitters to use lighter bats suited to their development stage.
USA Baseball Executive Director and CEO Paul Seiler emphasized that the change does not alter performance standards but rather consolidates them under a single governing body, providing clarity for manufacturers, schools and conferences.
By centralizing bat testing and certification, USA Baseball aims to create a more cohesive equipment model that benefits student‑athletes, coaches and the broader baseball community, eliminating confusion and fostering consistency across levels of play.
