The countdown to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated editions of the Games, and USA Basketball is laying the groundwork early.
Erik Spoelstra, the longtime architect of the Miami Heat’s success, was recently named head coach of the national team for this cycle, a role that also encompasses preparation for the 2027 FIBA World Championships.
Spoelstra’s Leadership
Spoelstra’s staff will be bolstered by a trio of experienced assistants: Mark Daigneault, J.B. Bickerstaff and Mark Few, each bringing a distinct blend of NBA pedigree and developmental insight.
The coaching pool will face a formidable challenge, with powerhouses such as France, Serbia, Germany and Canada all expected to field elite squads, the latter anchored by the rising star Victor Wembanyama.
Analysts predict that the United States will enter the tournament as favorites, thanks to a deep roster that includes NBA superstars like Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, LeBron James and Nikola Jokic, while the presence of Shams Charania as a senior reporter adds additional media focus.
