USC Basketball Eyes a Breakthrough Season
USC’s men’s basketball program is entering its third season under head coach Eric Musselman, a tenure marked by steady recruitment but still lacking a March Madness berth.
The Trojans have posted back‑to‑back records of 17‑18 and 18‑14 since joining the Big Ten, each campaign ending with a 12th‑place finish in the conference standings.
Roster turnover has been extensive; many scholarship players exhausted their eligibility or moved on, opening the door for fresh faces and transfers.
Among those returning, guard Rodney Rice brings Big Ten experience, while sophomore guard Alijah Arenas and center Jacob Cofie showed solid production last year.
The newcomers include transfers Isaac Bruns and Jalen Cox, as well as highly touted freshmen Christian Collins and Jadis Jones, each expected to contribute immediately.
USC’s coaching staff estimates that only 38 percent of last season’s minutes will be covered by returning players, placing the team 10th in the conference for minutes continuity.
Coach Musselman, who previously guided Nevada to a 30‑win season and Arkansas to the Sweet Sixteen, is confident that the blend of veteran savvy and fresh talent can finally click.
The ultimate test will be how quickly the new pieces mesh on the court, especially as the team opens conference play against traditional powerhouses.
If the chemistry develops as hoped, the Trojans could secure the automatic NCAA tournament bid that has eluded them for four years.
