The University of South Carolina’s Board of Trustees has sealed a five‑year agreement that will pay Kevin Schnall $1.3 million annually to lead the Gamecocks baseball program.
Schnall, who spent two seasons at Coastal Carolina before a 21‑year stint as a player and coach there, was selected after Athletic Director Jeremiah Donati completed a thorough search of candidates.
A substantial financial package
The contract guarantees Schnall a base salary of $1.3 million each year, while the university will also assume a $600,000 buyout obligation that he incurred at Coastal Carolina. In addition, the school will funnel $25,000 from its multimedia‑rights partner and deposit $100,000 into a tax‑deferred account for the new coach.
Schnall’s previous compensation at Coastal Carolina stood at $500,000 per annum, meaning the new deal represents a 160 percent increase in guaranteed earnings.
Departure of Paul Mainieri
Paul Mainieri, who had commanded the program for more than a decade, was relieved of his duties under a $2.5 million buyout clause. The board confirmed that Mainieri’s annual salary of $1.3 million will cease, and the university will now redirect those funds toward Schnall’s compensation and potential staff buyouts.
University officials indicated that they may also allocate additional buyout money to members of Schnall’s coaching staff, a move designed to ensure continuity and stability as the new regime takes shape.
The financial commitments underscore the university’s ambition to compete at the highest level of collegiate baseball, investing heavily in a program that has seen fluctuating fortunes in recent years.
Looking ahead
With the contract in place, attention now turns to how Schnall will reshape the roster, recruit new talent, and implement his coaching philosophy. The athletic department expressed confidence that the veteran coach’s blend of playing experience and administrative acumen will restore the Gamecocks to consistent contention in the SEC.
