USHL Announces Sweeping Expansion into the Southwest and West
The United States Hockey League is set to broaden its footprint, adding new franchises in Arizona, California and Nevada, a move endorsed by the National Hockey League and USA Hockey, to enhance junior hockey development and provide more opportunities for young players.
The expansion forms part of a broader strategy to deepen the talent pipeline for junior hockey in the United States, a league that currently comprises sixteen clubs spread across eight states and last welcomed the Madison Capitols in 2014.
A forthcoming announcement on Wednesday, June 24, will detail the designated club principals, the targeted markets and the anticipated timelines for each new franchise, underscoring the league’s meticulous planning.
Beyond sheer numbers, the USHL’s impact is reflected in the statistical footprint of its alumni: more than half of all NCAA Division I men’s hockey players have traversed the league, as have nearly one quarter of current NHL skaters.
The 2026 U.S. Olympic men’s gold‑medal team illustrates the pathway, with twenty‑one members of that championship roster having honed their craft in the USHL, among them Auston Matthews, Jake Guentzel, Jaccob Slavin, Matthew Knies, Josh Doan and Devin Cooley.
