A Deal Worth $2 Million
The Utah Mammoth announced on Tuesday that they have signed goaltender Sebastian Cossa to a two‑year contract, guaranteeing an average annual salary of $2 million. The agreement marks a significant financial commitment to a young net‑minder who has already proven his mettle at the highest levels of minor‑league hockey.
Cossa arrives in Utah after being acquired from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for a first‑round draft pick (23rd overall). The trade underscores the Mammoth’s intent to bolster their goaltending depth with a player who has already logged extensive professional experience.
A Path Forged in the AHL
During the 2025‑26 season, Cossa posted a 26‑8‑4 record with a 2.33 goals‑against average, a .915 save percentage and five shutouts across 39 games for the Grand Rapids Griffins. His performance earned him a spot at the AHL All‑Star Game in both 2025 and 2026, highlighting his status among the league’s elite.
Over four seasons with Grand Rapids, he compiled a 70‑33‑19 record, a 2.46 GAA, a .911 save percentage and eight shutouts in 123 regular‑season appearances. Those numbers reflect a steady progression from a promising prospect to a reliable starter.
NHL Debut and International Triumph
Cossa made his NHL debut on December 9, 2024, stopping 12 of 14 shots in a 2‑1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. The win marked his first professional victory in the league and signaled his readiness for the next step.
Internationally, the Hamilton native captured a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship and previously represented Canada White at the 2018 World Under‑17 Hockey Challenge. He also helped the Edmonton Oil Kings win the WHL championship in 2022, posting a 1.93 GAA and .919 save percentage in the playoffs.
Cossa will now wear the Mammoth jersey alongside forward Dylan Guenther, a teammate from their junior days with the Oil Kings. Their prior chemistry could prove pivotal as the franchise looks to contend in the Western Conference.
Looking Ahead
The signing reflects the Mammoth’s strategy of blending proven talent with emerging stars. With a solid defensive foundation and a roster enriched by Canadian talent, the team aims to translate its strong draft pedigree into deeper playoff runs in the coming seasons.
