UTEP Expands Coaching Roster Ahead of 2026‑27 Campaign

University of Texas at El Paso head coach Joe Golding revealed a series of staffing moves that will shape the Miners’ basketball program for the upcoming 2026‑27 season. The announcements, made public on Tuesday, introduce two new assistant coaches and promote an existing figure to a full‑time role.

Patrice Days, a veteran coach with more than ten years of experience at Mississippi State and Abilene Christian, will join the staff, bringing a track record of three straight 21‑win seasons and NCAA Tournament appearances. His reputation for developing talent and securing top recruits is expected to strengthen UTEP’s roster building efforts.

Joseph Jones, whose playing career spanned 13 professional seasons across nine countries, adds coaching expertise after stints at Texas A&M, Tarleton State and UTSA. He was recently honored as WAC Coach of the Year at Tarleton State, where he guided the team to a school‑record 25 victories and a CIT Semifinal run.

Drew Lakey, who contributed to Ole Miss’s 2025 Sweet 16 run, has been elevated to a full‑time assistant position. Lakey’s background in player development, analytics and recruiting, honed at Old Dominion University and during his playing days at the University of Virginia, positions him to help the Miners refine both on‑court strategy and off‑court preparation.

The additions of Days, Jones and Lakey reflect a coordinated effort to inject depth and experience into the program. Head coach Golding emphasized that the new staff members bring a blend of recruiting acumen, analytical insight and proven winning pedigrees, all aimed at positioning UTEP for competitive success in the coming season.
