Fall Camp Highlights
UTEP’s third fall camp opened with a crisp scrimmage that left coach Scotty Walden smiling. He pointed to a balanced attack and a defense that limited big plays as the most encouraging signs.
Freshmen made immediate noise. Tylen Hockett, known on campus as Iceman, and Kane White‑Tinsley caught the coach’s eye, while receiver Nik Henry hauled in two touchdown passes that showcased his playmaking instincts.
At quarterback, EJ Colson delivered a steady performance, moving the offense with on‑time progressions and keeping turnovers to a minimum. Backup signal‑caller Raymond Moore also drew praise for his poise under pressure.
The defensive line took a different approach, relying less on blitzes and more on raw talent. Freshmen Dycin Davis and Justin Roberts anchored the front, while guard Brian “Bam” Williams provided leadership and physicality without a single fumble.
Perhaps the most telling metric was the reduction in mental errors. Compared with previous camps, the team logged fewer turnovers and displayed better retention of the playbook, a sign that the coaching staff’s messaging is finally sinking in.
All of this sets the stage for the highly anticipated season opener against Oklahoma on September 4. The scrimmage served as a valuable dress rehearsal, giving Walden and his staff a clearer picture of who will see the field first.
