The University of Texas at El Paso’s football program is emerging from a 2‑10 season that left it near the bottom of the Mountain West Conference, but a fresh wave of energy is coursing through fall camp as the Miners prepare to rewrite their narrative.
A major focus of the preparation is the offensive line, where three transfers — Jayden Trapp, Omoruyi Aliu‑Otokiti and Jayson Lamb — have already arrived, and two more, Isaiah Maumalanga and Rashad Smith, have been added since spring. New offensive line coach Andy Townsend, who previously mentored Lamb at North Texas, is expected to instill a culture change and tighten fundamentals.
The roster also benefits from six late‑season transfers, including offensive lineman Jerrel Brasher and running back Chris Hunter, while veterans such as Kam Thomas and Garrett Hawkins return from injuries, giving the squad a healthier outlook than a year ago.
At the heart of the offense is quarterback EJ Colson, whose arrival was designed to address a unit that led the FBS in interceptions last season. Colson’s potential will hinge on the line’s ability to keep him protected, but the coaching staff sees him as the catalyst for a more consistent attack.
A New Era Under Scotty Walden
Head coach Scotty Walden has framed the upcoming season as a turning point, stressing that the combination of a healthier lineup, upgraded line play and a more disciplined defense must translate into wins. If the pieces click, the Miners could climb out of the conference basement and contend for a postseason berth.
