UTRGV Basketball Prepares for a Transformative Season
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is buzzing with anticipation as both the men's and women's basketball teams gear up for a new campaign. While the schedule for the upcoming season remains undisclosed, the programs are already deep in preparation, focusing on chemistry, conditioning and strategy.
For the men's side, this preparation marks a distinct departure from the previous year. Under first‑year head coach Brandon Chambers, the team has undergone a major overhaul, with only two players returning from last season and 12 newcomers joining the roster. Chambers has emphasized that the new group brings a blend of character and athleticism that he believes can compete at a high level.
The women's program, by contrast, retains seven of its previous contributors but will be without two key stars, Jalayah Ingram and Charlotte O'Keefe. Head coach Lane Lord has spoken about the leadership and work ethic that O'Keefe left behind, noting that the returning core will need to step up to fill the void left by those departures.
Both coaching staffs are using the offseason to instill their philosophies and build cohesion among the players. Chambers is focusing on defining roles for the influx of new talent, while Lord is looking to amplify the work ethic that characterized his predecessor's tenure. The early emphasis is on developing a defensive identity and a balanced offensive approach.
The lack of a released schedule adds an element of uncertainty, but it also provides a unique opportunity for the teams to fine‑tune their systems without the pressure of immediate competition. As the squads continue to train, the excitement among players and staff is palpable, with each side eager to prove that the changes will translate into on‑court success.
