The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is preparing for a pivotal basketball season, with both the men's and women's teams navigating significant changes. Athletic Director Lane Lord has emphasized that the programs are focused on building chemistry and cohesion as they head into uncharted territory.
A Fresh Coaching Landscape
Brandon Chambers has taken the reins of the men's program, inheriting a roster that will feature only two returning players and welcome twelve newcomers. Coach Chambers has spoken repeatedly about the importance of character and teamwork, noting that the new faces bring a blend of youthful energy and seasoned intent.
On the women's side, Head Coach Lane Lord highlighted the leadership vacuum left by the departure of Jalayah Ingram and Charlotte O’Keefe, two players whose work ethic set a standard for the returning seven athletes. The remaining roster members have cited Ingram and O’Keefe as inspirational figures as they seek to fill the void left by their departure.
Building Chemistry Without a Schedule in Hand
With the official competition schedule yet to be released, both squads are concentrating on drills, scrimmages and team‑building exercises. The men's team finished third in the Southland Conference last year and endured a triple‑overtime battle in the SLC tournament, experiences that Chambers believes will inform his approach to the new roster.
The women's program, while retaining seven veterans, must adapt to the loss of two standout stars. Coach Lord has underscored that the leadership and work ethic demonstrated by Ingram and O’Keefe will continue to echo throughout the locker room, guiding the next generation of players as they forge their own identity on the court.
