The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) transformed its soccer complex in Brownsville into a vibrant community hub last weekend, offering a free youth clinic that welcomed 55 children from across the city.
Organized by age and position groups, the clinic featured a series of fun drills, simulated penalty kicks and small‑sided games, all overseen by the men’s soccer staff under the guidance of head coach Bryheem Hancock, who emphasized the program’s dedication to local youth development.
Community Soccer Night Brings Youth and Teams Together
The same weekend the women’s team faced Mexico’s Tec de Monterrey in an exhibition match, securing a clean‑sheet victory that was celebrated by a crowd of UTRGV supporters. Head coach Nataki Stewart pointed to several positive moments while acknowledging areas that still need refinement.
Building on that momentum, UTRGV will host the Borregos men’s side from Tec de Monterrey in another exhibition on Sunday, followed by the women’s season opener against Texas Southern on Thursday. Both fixtures are open to the public and free of charge, reinforcing the university’s policy of accessible sport.
Beyond the scores, these events underscore a broader mission: using soccer as a bridge between the university and the Brownsville community, fostering youth engagement and providing a platform for local fans to connect with collegiate athletes.
