The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team opened its summer training camp this week, marking the first steps toward the 2026‑27 season under new head coach Brandon Chambers.
A Fresh Start for the Vaqueros
Fourteen athletes reported to the campus gym, a blend of two returning veterans and a wave of newcomers drawn from conference rivals, power‑four programs, junior colleges and other divisions.
Coach Chambers, who was hired just 64 days ago, took the opportunity to stress energy, enthusiasm and effort as the cornerstones of his philosophy.
Focus on Fundamentals and Chemistry
The drills emphasized shooting mechanics, defensive footwork and transition play, while team‑building exercises aimed to forge cohesion among a group that has never played together.
Veteran players such as Luis Ramirez and Always Wright are expected to provide leadership, while fresh faces like T'Johnn Brown, B.B. Knight and Jace Posey bring diverse skill sets.
Recruiting Diversity
The incoming roster reflects a geographic and stylistic spread, with athletes arriving from across the country and from varied collegiate levels, a factor that Chambers believes will enrich the team's dynamics.
Devon Pryor, Chris Uwayo, Josiah Hill, Caden Bell, Darius Carr, Terrell Wright, Bobby Crawford Jr., Kaleb Corbitt and Ian Parham Jr. are among those looking to make an early impact.
The summer schedule will run through July, giving the squad ample time to refine tactics and build the unity that Chambers says will be decisive when the regular season arrives.
If the early workouts are any indication, the Vaqueros may be on the cusp of a promising campaign, with the coach optimistic that collective effort and a shared vision could translate into on‑court success.
