UTRGV Women’s Soccer Falls 4-1 to Texas State in Road Match

Isabella Burtini scores first goal of season as Vaqueros struggle against dominant Texas State offense

The UTRGV Vaqueros women's soccer team traveled to face Texas State on Thursday, only to see their hopes dashed as the visitors fell 4-1. The match unfolded as a test of resilience for a young squad that entered the game with limited experience on the road.

Texas State came out firing, building a 2-0 lead by halftime despite a physical defensive effort from UTRGV. The Vaqueros were outshot 22-3, with a 7-1 advantage on target, underscoring the opposition's early dominance.

Key Moments Define the Match

The turning point arrived in the 72nd minute when junior Isabella Burtini found the net for the first time this season, the ball set up by Anuhea Aalona. Earlier, Constance Agyemang opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, assisted by Sydney Ritter, while Grace El-Deir doubled the lead in the 38th minute after a cross from Matsuri Tsutsui.

Texas State added two more goals, one in the 49th minute when Ava Kooker's cross found Victoria Meza, and another in the 65th minute as Meza struck again, pushing the margin to 4-0. In the closing stages, UTRGV managed a consolation goal, and the defense held Texas State scoreless for the final 25 minutes.

Goalkeeper Marina Amezcua made two crucial saves in the 20th and 24th minutes, while defender Erika Parker cleared a loose ball in the 28th minute to keep the deficit manageable. Midfielder Veronica Pacione made her UTRGV debut during the second half, adding fresh legs to the midfield.

Looking ahead, the Vaqueros are scheduled to host Prairie View A&M on Thursday at 6:30 p.m., hoping to rebound from the loss and fine‑tune their strategy before the next challenge.
