A Fresh Batch of Talent
The University of Virginia’s athletics department issued a formal release on Tuesday confirming the addition of eight new student‑athletes to the men’s basketball program for the 2026‑27 season. The class includes a 6‑foot‑6 guard from Germany, Nolan Adekunle, who joins a group that blends seasoned contributors with promising newcomers.
Coach Ryan Odom, now in his second year at the helm, said the newcomers bring a mix of skill sets that will expand the team’s options on both ends of the floor. He highlighted the depth the class provides, noting that the roster will feature multiple point guards, shooting guards and frontcourt players capable of stepping into larger roles.
Among the newcomers, Elijah Gertrude, a former four‑star recruit who sat out the previous season on a medical redshirt, and Martin Carrere, a redshirt sophomore who transferred from VCU, are expected to compete for minutes in the backcourt. Both players are recognized for their shooting prowess and versatility.
The projected rotation also lists several other signees who have posted strong statistical lines at their previous institutions, giving the coaching staff flexibility to experiment with lineups throughout the long schedule. The class is described by the department as offering “outstanding depth and flexibility” as the team looks to contend in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
