A challenging slate
The University of Virginia has released its non‑conference schedule for the upcoming 2026‑27 women’s basketball season, setting up a slate that blends early‑season tests with opportunities for growth under first‑year head coach Aaron Roussell.
Roussell’s debut is slated for November 2 against Maryland Eastern Shore, a game he hopes will provide a baseline as he evaluates the team’s chemistry and address the questions that inevitably arise at the start of a new era.
Home contests will feature matchups against William & Mary, Drexel, James Madison, American, Navy, Stony Brook and Norfolk State, while the road portion includes trips to Davidson, Old Dominion and Mississippi State, the latter serving as part of the SEC/ACC Challenge.
Neutral‑site tests and RPI context
Neutral‑site events add another layer of competition, with the team slated to play Oklahoma and UAB in the Jacksonville Classic in late November and Kentucky in the espnW Invitational in Nashville in December. Davidson entered the season with a 2025‑26 RPI of 73, JMU at 45, Oklahoma at 13 and Mississippi State at 43, illustrating the range of competition awaiting the Cavaliers.
Roussell has emphasized that the schedule is designed not only to test the squad but also to teach valuable lessons, noting that several of the games fall into the Quad 4 category and that the overall difficulty is challenging yet purposeful.
Assistant coach Amaka Agugua‑Hamilton highlighted that nine of the eleven non‑conference contests are Quad 4 matchups, underscoring the intent to expose the team to a range of competitive environments.
