This week Virginia University (UVA) endured a pair of setbacks across its women's soccer and field hockey programs, underscoring challenges that have arisen early in the season.
Women's Soccer
In a tightly contested women's soccer match, UVA held Georgetown to a 0‑0 deadlock through regulation and overtime before the contest was decided by a 7‑3 shootout loss. Although the Cavaliers outshot the Hoyas 7‑3, they failed to convert enough of their chances, a disparity that coach Steve Swanson described as disappointing, noting an improved second‑half performance but insufficient offensive quality.
The game opened with a swift strike from Caroline Raynes just six seconds in, giving UVA an early lead that was quickly erased as the teams settled into a stalemate. At halftime the score remained level, the deadlock having been reinforced by six unconverted penalty corners on each side.
Bella Moore added the only UVA goal in the second half, but the deficit proved too great to overcome as the shootout concluded the match.
Field Hockey
Later in the week, the fifth‑ranked UVA field hockey squad traveled to face Ohio State in the Big 10/ACC Challenge, only to see a 2‑1 defeat that was sealed by two late goals from the Buckeyes. Virginia had taken an early lead through a goal by an unnamed scorer, but Ohio State’s resurgence in the final minutes turned the contest into a narrow loss.
Both outcomes leave UVA with a wake‑up call as it adjusts its strategies for the remainder of the season, with coach Swanson emphasizing the need for greater clinical finishing in soccer and a more resilient defensive approach in field hockey.
