The University of West Florida will kick off its first Division I football campaign on August 27, 2026, when the Argos travel to face Southern Illinois.
The 11‑game slate features five home contests and seven conference matchups within the United Athletic Conference, setting the stage for a rigorous debut season.
Because the program is in a three‑year probationary window, the Argos will be barred from the FCS playoffs but remain eligible to contend for the UAC championship, a unique combination that shapes their strategic approach.
A New Era for the Argos
Among the opponents, former Division II powers such as Northeastern State, West Alabama and West Georgia await, while the team also meets Central Arkansas, Austin Peay and Southeast Missouri State, each bringing recent competitive histories that promise challenging games.
Quarterback DJ Williams, a Walter Payton Offensive Player of the Year finalist, returns for his final year of eligibility, adding veteran leadership to a squad that also includes redshirt junior Chris Parson, a Payton award finalist, and linebacker Montreze Smith Jr., a Jerry Rice Award contender.
Other storylines involve Abilene Christian, the two‑time UAC champions who return leading rusher Ro’Vaughn Banks Jr. and all‑conference linemen Colter Lynch and Luke Roaten, as well as Tarleton State, the conference’s 12‑2 powerhouse that finished the season ranked sixth nationally.
