Battle at the Bay: UWF’s Division I Debut Against Florida State
On November 29, the University of West Florida’s men’s basketball team will step onto the court at the Pensacola Bay Center for a clash that many are calling the Battle at the Bay. The game pits the fledgling Division I program against the storied Florida State University, marking a milestone in UWF’s transition to the Atlantic Sun Conference.
The matchup is part of a carefully curated 2026‑27 schedule that not only introduces an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent but also weaves in nonconference contests against Florida International University, the University of South Florida and Navy. Each fixture is designed to test the team’s mettle early in its Division I journey.
UWF Athletic Director Dave Scott emphasized the strategic importance of the Florida State game, noting that it serves as a benchmark for the program and a rallying point for the local community. “Playing a school of Florida State’s caliber accelerates our growth and showcases what UWF can achieve,” he said.
Head Coach Tanner Smith echoed the sentiment, describing the encounter as a “memorable opportunity” for players and staff. “Our guys are eager to measure themselves against a national powerhouse and to bring that experience back to campus,” Smith added.
Tickets for the Battle at the Bay will become available to the public on August 28 at 10 a.m., with sales handled through pensacolabaycenter.com and the venue’s box office. Early‑bird pricing and group packages are expected to draw significant interest from students, alumni and regional fans.
