When the final whistle blew on the Colorado State Cup finals, three squads from the Vail Valley Soccer Club earned the right to test themselves against the nation’s best at the US Youth Soccer National Championships in Utah. The 14U, 15U and 18U Boys Navy teams, each crowned state champions, boarded buses bound for the western tournament, eager to measure their progress against elite competition.
The 18U side entered the tournament’s “super” bracket, the premier tier that pits the strongest regional winners against one another. After a narrow loss to Raiders FC, a defeat against MYSA Independent Teams Bomb Squad, and a hard‑fought victory over PacNW Maroon A, the coaches and players reflected on the experience. “It was a lesson in resilience,” said Kerri Thelen, executive director of the Vail Valley Soccer Club, who praised the squad’s determination and the unwavering support of families and sponsors.
The 14U team navigated a challenging pool, falling to Mockingbird Valley Premier and Columbia Rush Blue before securing a win against Monroe United Black. Meanwhile, the 15U group finished second in its pool, defeating Alliance Eleven, sharing a draw with Stones River FC and dropping a close match to Seattle United. That same age group had captured the Presidents Cup national title the previous year, a testament to sustained development. Coach Joel Rabinowitz highlighted the blend of talent and grit that defined the campaign, while player Cameron Kamin noted how the trip forged lasting bonds among teammates.
Beyond the scores, the tournament offered a glimpse into the growth of young athletes who balanced competition with personal development. Reflections from Cesar Castillo, Jeremy Thelen and Jaime Najera underscored the importance of mentorship, community backing, and the joy of representing their region on a national stage.
