A Scandal in the Making
Jonas Valanciunas, the NBA‑seasoned center who has long been a pillar of Lithuania’s basketball identity, has launched a scathing critique of the Lithuanian Basketball Association, accusing its leadership of dysfunction and a lack of accountability.
His remarks come as the national team sits fourth in Group J with a 3‑3 record, needing five wins from six matches to secure a spot at the 2027 FIBA World Cup in Qatar.
Valanciunas explained that his absence from the recent World Cup qualifiers was not a tactical decision but the result of career transitions and personal preparations after returning to Lithuania from the NBA.
He highlighted the association’s habit of issuing last‑minute schedule changes and poor communication, which he says make it difficult for players to balance family commitments with national duties.
The veteran also questioned why coaches are hesitant to accept the national team role, suggesting that dissatisfaction with the current working environment and leadership is at the heart of the reluctance.
Valanciunas urged stakeholders to move beyond media‑driven blame games and engage in direct dialogue, arguing that systemic changes are essential if Lithuania hopes to improve its qualifying prospects.
While he left the door open for a potential return, he emphasized that his patriotism remains strong and that he would only consider rejoining the squad if the organization demonstrates meaningful reform.
