Van Buren Vipers: A New Co‑Op Football Program Unites Three Michigan Towns

After years of dwindling rosters, Bangor, Lawrence and Covert combine forces under coach Ryan Casey, aiming to revive 11‑man football.

A fresh start on the gridiron

Bangor, Lawrence and Covert, three modest communities in southwest Michigan, have combined their struggling football programs into a single entity called the Van Buren Vipers. The move comes as each school faced shrinking enrollments and an inability to field a full varsity squad on its own.

Coach Ryan Casey, who spearheaded the merger, explained that the consolidation is a pragmatic response to declining player numbers. Covert has not fielded an independent team for more than a decade, and Lawrence’s roster has been equally thin. Bangor’s participation dropped further after the COVID‑19 pandemic, forcing the school to operate an eight‑man squad in recent seasons.

The new co‑op will begin competition in eight‑man football, a format that allows the combined squad to field a viable lineup while rebuilding depth. Casey emphasized that the ultimate goal is to transition back to the standard 11‑man game once sufficient talent has been gathered.

Building a foundation for the future

About 42 students have signed up to wear the Vipers’ colors, a promising sign for a program that aims to field both junior‑varsity and varsity teams. Practices will be held at Bangor’s facilities, while home games will rotate among the three host schools, giving each community a chance to showcase the merged program.

Beyond the X’s and O’s, the merger represents a broader effort to unite the towns’ young athletes under a shared identity. By pooling resources, the Vipers hope to create a more sustainable football culture that can eventually compete at the traditional high‑school level across Michigan.
