Vanderbilt Commodores baseball is set to open the 2027 season with two high‑profile exhibition series that will take them out of Tennessee and into the desert and the Midwest.
Early‑Season Matchups Set the Tone
In February the team will travel to Surprise, Arizona, to compete in the Surprise College Baseball Series, where they will meet Nebraska, Oregon State and UC Santa Barbara. The following month they will host a Nashville College Baseball Series at home, facing Ohio State, Virginia Tech and Cincinnati.
The Commodores are looking to bounce back after a 2026 campaign that ended without a spot in the NCAA Tournament, snapping a 19‑year streak of appearances. They finished that season 33‑25, a respectable record but one that highlighted deficiencies in pitching, as the staff ranked 12th in the SEC and 13th in conference play for team ERA.
Coaching staff have emphasized improving batting consistency and defensive reliability, and several position players have been added to the roster. However, as of mid‑June the transfer portal has not yielded any new pitchers, leaving the rotation a work in progress.
Nebraska stands out as a notable opponent; the Cornhuskers hosted the Lincoln Regional in 2026 as the No. 13 overall seed, underscoring the challenge Vanderbilt will face early in the year.
The upcoming series will serve as a barometer for the Commodores’ progress and could shape their national ranking as the season unfolds.
