Vanderbilt’s basketball program received a significant boost this offseason as guard Tyler Tanner announced his return, positioning the Commodores as a preseason top‑25 contender for the 2026‑27 campaign.
Coach Mark Byington, now in his second year, has emphasized adding size and tightening defensive schemes, aiming to transform the team into a more physical presence on both ends of the floor.
Tanner, a versatile guard capable of scoring, defending and facilitating, is expected to anchor the backcourt alongside a mix of returning veterans and fresh talent.

The Commodores’ schedule will test them early against traditional powerhouses, but the blend of experience, size and defensive intensity suggests Vanderbilt could surprise many analysts when the season unfolds.
