Vanderbilt’s New Era Under Clark Lea and the Rise of Ricardo Jones

After a 10‑3 season, the Commodores aim to build depth while a Clemson safety eyes a breakout in the SEC

A Fresh Start in Nashville

Vanderbilt football is stepping into a new chapter under head coach Clark Lea, whose 10‑3 record last season has set high expectations for the Commodores.

The roster will look different, with star quarterback Diego Pavia and tight end Eli Stowers moving on, but Lea says the team’s depth and experience give him confidence that the gaps can be filled.

Analysts place Vanderbilt’s offense at 34th in national experience and rank the defense fourth in the country, while the program sits second in game experience and twelfth in returning starts across the nation.

A New Threat in the Secondary

Among the newcomers drawing attention is Ricardo Jones, a Clemson safety who has been slotted at No. 12 on Vanderbilt’s top‑20 player list. In 2025 he logged 39 tackles, three passes defended, one forced fumble and led the ACC with six interceptions — the most by a Clemson defender since 2009.

Jones’ snap count jumped from 124 as a freshman to 716 last season, earning him All‑ACC honors as a sophomore and prompting him to look forward to proving himself in the SEC.

Lea notes that while the Commodores have the best depth he’s seen, the transition also brings challenges, and Jones’ potential impact could be a key factor in reshaping the team’s defensive outlook.
