A New Chapter for the Commodores' Line
Vanderbilt's offensive line entered the 2025 season as a semifinalist for the Joe Moore Award, the annual recognition given to the nation's best unit in college football. Building on that momentum, the Commodores are now focused on capturing the award outright in 2026, a goal that requires both continuity and fresh talent.
The line lost four starters from the previous year — Jordan White, Chase Mitchell, Isaia Glass and Bryce Henderson — creating openings for newcomers. Coach Clark Lea, who has guided the program through a period of transition, emphasized that the team's success will hinge on chemistry, preparation and clean execution.
Recruiting through the transfer portal has supplied the unit with experienced pieces. Beau Johnson arrives from North Dakota State, Michael Smith brings a junior‑college pedigree from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Lyndon Cooper joins after stints at NC State and Pitt, and Micah DeBose adds depth after a season at Alabama.
Among the returning players, Clinton Azubuike, Gunner Givens and Orion Irving are competing for starting roles after seeing limited snaps in 2025. Kevo Wesley, who missed the entire previous campaign due to injury, is back for his seventh year and brings veteran stability to the group.
Offensive line coach Chris Klenakis praised the seamless integration of the new faces, noting that their familiarity with the program's processes accelerates development. Lyndon Cooper, who selected Vanderbilt after weighing offers from several Power Four schools, highlighted the supportive environment and the enthusiastic reception from Tennessee fans when he wears the Commodores' colors.
Cade McConnell, who transitioned from center to guard, underscores that teamwork and meticulous preparation are the foundations of their ambition. The unit's mantra — playing "clean" and "dominant football" — reflects a collective resolve to improve upon last year's semifinalist finish and contend for the top spot.
