Vashek Blanar entered the Boston Bruins organization in March 2025, bringing a blend of size and offensive flair that immediately caught the eye of the development staff. At 6‑foot‑5 and 183 pounds, the Czech defenseman combines reach with a puck‑moving skill set that made him a quick study at the team’s camp.
A Season of Growth in Sweden
Rather than staying in North America, Blanar chose to spend the campaign with HV71 in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). While he logged only three games at the senior level, the majority of his minutes came with the club’s U20 side, where he could experiment with more aggressive defensive positioning under the guidance of seasoned coaches.
The move proved fruitful on the international stage. Blanar earned a spot on the Czech roster for both the Five Nations tournament and a U19 competition in April, and he remained on the World Junior Championships list despite not seeing game action. Those experiences gave him exposure to different defensive systems and intensified his focus on becoming a more reliable two‑way player.
Physical Maturation and Future Plans
Beyond tactical refinement, Blanar has noticeably bulked up, now listed at 6‑foot‑5 and 183 pounds. The added mass should help him hold his ground in the more physical corners of the SHL and prepare him for the rigors of North American ice. For the 2027‑28 season, he is slated to join UMass, where he will continue to develop both offensively and defensively while remaining eligible for the 2027 World Junior Championships in Edmonton and Red Deer.
Bruins development staff have praised his commitment to improvement, noting that his defensive game has taken "serious strides" over the past year. As he heads into his next chapter, the organization views him as a prospect who can translate his SHL experience into a more polished, NHL‑ready style.
