A high school football player in Arkansas was going about his usual practice when he felt an unexpected weight inside his helmet. Upon opening it, he discovered a two‑foot‑long cottonmouth snake coiled inside, its scales glistening in the locker room light.
The reptile, identified by wildlife experts as a cottonmouth — one of Arkansas’s most venomous species — had slipped into the protective gear undetected, remaining hidden for nearly an hour before the athlete noticed the unusual sensation.
Coach and teammates reacted quickly, securing the area and contacting local authorities. Animal Services arrived within minutes, safely capturing the snake and transporting it to a wildlife rehabilitation center for relocation.
Chris Davis, director of Animal Services, said the incident marked the first time a snake had been found lodged in a football helmet in the agency’s records, underscoring how rare such encounters truly are.

The discovery prompted a brief pause in the session as coaches emphasized safety and the importance of vigilance. Parents and school officials were notified, and the incident sparked a conversation about wildlife awareness in school sports programs.
