A Close Call on the Field
During a morning practice at a high school in Arkansas, a football player made an unexpected discovery: a venomous cottonmouth snake had taken refuge inside the padding of his helmet. The reptile was hidden in a dark, enclosed space that is not typically associated with outdoor sports.
Maumelle Animal Services responded quickly, confirming that the creature was indeed a cottonmouth rather than a copperhead. Officers had to flood the helmet to coax the snake out safely, ensuring that both the player and the animal remained unharmed.
The cottonmouth is recognized as the second most venomous snake species in Arkansas, trailing only behind rattlesnakes in terms of toxicity. Its presence in a piece of athletic equipment underscores the potential hazards that can lurk in seemingly ordinary environments.
The student-athlete escaped the encounter without a bite or injury, but the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of inspecting gear and sheltered areas before use. Animal Services later relocated the snake to a suitable habitat away from the campus.
Chris Davis, director of Maumelle Animal Services, noted that he has never before encountered a snake inside a football helmet, highlighting just how unusual this incident was. His statement reflects both surprise and a growing awareness of wildlife interactions with human belongings.
