A Venomous Intruder on the Field
During a routine practice session at Maumelle High School, coaches and teammates were startled when a venomous cottonmouth snake slithered out from the padding of a player's football helmet.
The reptile, later identified as a cottonmouth — also known as a water moccasin — had taken refuge in the tight spaces of the helmet, a spot that can easily become a hidden nest for snakes seeking warmth.
Animal control officers arrived on scene and, after confirming the species, used a controlled flooding technique to coax the snake out without harming the athlete, who remained unbitten.
Chris Davis, director of Maumelle Animal Services, described the incident as a first‑time occurrence for his team, noting that “the snake could have been fatal” if it had bitten the player.
Cottonmouths rank among the most venomous snakes in Arkansas, trailing only rattlesnakes in toxicity, and their presence in unexpected locales such as sports equipment underscores the need for vigilance in outdoor activities.
