Vermont’s Burr and Burton Unified basketball team captured the gold medal at the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games in Minnesota, completing a story that blended athletic skill with the spirit of inclusion.
A Season Built on Commitment
The squad finished the regular season with an 8‑1 record, practicing three times a week and honing the chemistry that would carry them through a demanding tournament schedule.
Their opening victory over Idaho, a 25‑17 win, set an early tone of confidence, followed by a dominant 29‑9 triumph against Missouri in the preliminary round.
A narrow defeat by Delaware, 32‑25, tested the team’s resolve, but the athletes used the setback as fuel for a comeback that culminated in a 34‑21 championship victory.
Voices of Leadership
Head Coach Don Benasich praised the team’s belief in themselves, noting that their preparation and unity were the cornerstones of the championship run. Tess Wilkinson, communications and social media manager for Special Olympics Vermont, added that the performance embodied the core values of Unified Sports — teamwork, determination, inclusion and joy.
Beyond the Scoreboard
The triumph reflects a broader movement that uses sport to bridge communities, offering athletes with intellectual disabilities a platform to showcase ability and be celebrated. As the team returns home, the impact of their achievement will ripple through schools, families and supporters across the state.
