A transatlantic soccer tale
In late July, a group of Vermont teenagers traveled to Reykjavík to compete in the Rey Cup, Iceland’s premier youth soccer tournament. The competition, held from July 22 to 26, gathered six local clubs to face off against visiting squads from the Green Mountain State, creating a unique cross‑Atlantic encounter that would test both skill and spirit.
The matches were marked by fast, physical play and a high level of intensity, but the Vermont side quickly earned respect for their resilience and teamwork. Despite arriving with only ten outfield players, the team adapted to the demanding schedule and gradually built chemistry with their Icelandic opponents, who welcomed them with enthusiastic cheers and traditional chants from the sidelines.
Mid‑tournament, the Vermont roster received an unexpected boost when an Icelandic goalkeeper named Kevin joined the squad. His presence between the posts added a new dimension to the defense and helped the team navigate several close contests, contributing to an unbeaten streak that would define their campaign.
Under the guidance of head coach Don Haddox, the Vermont boys secured first place in the U14 division, finishing the tournament without a loss. Their triumph was complemented by a strong showing from the Vermont ODP Girls U14 team, which captured third place in its own division, underscoring the breadth of talent emerging from the state’s developmental programs.
The championship matches were attended by Vermont Soccer Association Executive Director Andrew Minnis, who praised the tournament’s ability to foster international friendship while highlighting the competitive standards that elevate young players. The Rey Cup, founded in 2002, has grown into the largest and most prestigious youth soccer event in Iceland, drawing teams from around the world and serving as a platform for cultural exchange.
Beyond the trophies, the experience left a lasting imprint on the Vermont athletes. They departed Reykjavík with a championship trophy, new friendships forged on the field, and a deeper appreciation for the global soccer community.
