Lou "Scooter" Tolzda, who guided the Union Local Jets girls' basketball team for five seasons, announced his resignation this week, bringing an end to a tenure that reshaped the program.
A Legacy That Extends Beyond Wins
During his time at the helm, Tolzda compiled a 108‑22 record, highlighted by a 20‑5 campaign that culminated in a heartbreaking buzzer‑beating loss to West Muskingum. His teams averaged 22 wins per year over a ten‑year span, captured multiple regional championships and earned two Final Four berths.
The coach, also known for his 583‑win career that stretches back four decades across stints at Shadyside, Beallsville, Monroe Central and Meadowbrook, cited differing views on the future direction of the girls' basketball program as a key factor in his decision.
Beyond the court, Tolzda continues to serve the district as Dean of Students and a classroom teacher, focusing on student support and mentorship.
The Union Local School District plans to advertise the vacant head coaching position on Monday, kicking off a search for the next leader who will build on the foundation Tolzda helped create.
