After 18 years steering the Smyrna High School football team, veteran coach Matt Williams announced his retirement this week, marking the end of a distinguished era for the program.
During his tenure he compiled 121 victories and guided the team to the playoffs on 17 occasions, including a state‑runner‑up finish in 2010 and two quarterfinal appearances.
Williams will now serve as assistant principal and athletic director at Rockvale High School, where he hopes to bring the same dedication to leadership that defined his coaching career.
A Family’s Football Legacy
His brother, Mark Williams, has been named the new head coach of Smyrna. Mark previously served as an assistant at Smyrna from 2008 to 2011 and returned to the staff in 2019, before leading Gallatin High School as head coach.
The Williams brothers share a deep connection to Tennessee football, and both have expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming chapter.
Matt Williams took the opportunity to thank former Principal Robert Raikes and the entire staff for their support throughout his career, noting that leaving Smyrna is bittersweet but that he looks forward to his new responsibilities.
Reflections on a Player‑Coach Bond
Throughout his time at Smyrna, Williams highlighted the special bond he forged with his players and fellow coaches, a relationship that he says will remain a cornerstone of his professional memories.
As he steps into his new role, Williams is focused on building on the foundation he helped create, aiming to foster growth both on the field and within the school community.
