A New Era for Maryland Baseball
Veteran coach Sal Colangelo has been appointed general manager of the Maryland Terrapins baseball program, bringing with him a career that spans nearly three decades of collegiate leadership.
Colangelo’s journey began in the Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League where he guided the Bethesda Big Train to more than 660 victories and 11 league titles. His contributions earned him a place in the league’s Hall of Fame in 2019, underscoring a reputation built on sustained excellence.
Matt Swope, the team’s head coach, highlighted Colangelo’s extensive baseball knowledge and his pride in the DMV region as key reasons for the hire. The appointment comes at a moment when Maryland baseball has endured consecutive losing seasons for the first time in over ten years, a slump the program hopes to reverse under new leadership.
Track and Field Highlights
On the track, Maryland athletes continue to shine. Quincy Wilson captured silver in the 400‑meter dash and gold as part of the 4×400‑meter relay at the U‑20 World Championship, adding international recognition to the university’s athletic portfolio.
Kicker Sean O’Haire has also earned a spot on the Lou Groza Award watch list, a nod to his standing among the nation’s top placekickers and a potential boost for the football program’s profile.
Meanwhile, J’Lon Lyons, a promising guard from the class of 2027, is slated to visit the Maryland men’s basketball team from September 17 through 19, signaling continued investment in the university’s broader sports ecosystem.
