The Cincinnati Cyclones have announced the addition of veteran defenseman Matt Hellickson to their roster for the 2026‑27 season, bringing a blend of college pedigree and international experience to the team's blue line.
A College Career at Notre Dame
During his four years at the University of Notre Dame, Hellickson emerged as a defensive leader, serving as alternate captain in his final season and contributing 52 points — 13 goals and 39 assists — across 146 games. He helped the Fighting Irish capture back‑to‑back Big Ten Conference titles in 2017‑18 and 2018‑19, underscoring his impact on the program.
After graduating, Hellickson signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs organization, spending three professional seasons within the system. He first appeared with the Toronto Marlies before moving to the Newfoundland Growlers, where he continued to develop his defensive game.
His professional journey also took him to the AHL, where he suited up for the Binghamton Devils, before earning a Bronze Medal with the United States at the 2021 IIHF Men’s World Championship.
Now, returning to the professional ranks after a season away, Hellickson will look to bring his leadership and steady play to Cincinnati, a franchise that has been building toward a deeper playoff push. His signing reflects the Cyclones' strategy of layering experienced talent around younger prospects.
