Portillo’s new chapter with the Cyclones
The Cincinnati Cyclones have secured the services of forward Justin Portillo for the upcoming 2026‑27 season, confirming a deal that will see the 34‑year‑old back on the ice for a second full campaign with the club.
Portillo’s return comes after a standout 2025‑26 stretch in which he appeared in 43 games, contributing a career‑high 72 penalty minutes that placed him third among the team’s most disciplined players.
The veteran also marked his ECHL debut with a goal on January 9, 2026, against the Fort Wayne Komets, an achievement that added a rare offensive spark to a player primarily known for his physical presence.
Before joining the Cyclones, Portillo navigated six different organizations in the Federal Prospects Hockey League and the SPHL from 2019 through 2025, honing a versatile skill set that blends grit with occasional scoring touch.
His initial taste of ECHL action dates back to the 2021‑22 season with the Kansas City Mavericks, where he logged 11 appearances and began to translate his junior‑level experience into the professional ranks.
Coaches say his blend of toughness and emerging offensive instincts should provide depth and stability as the Cyclones aim to contend for a playoff berth next winter.
