Wade Murphy, a seasoned forward with more than a decade of professional experience, has agreed to a contract with the Wichita Thunder for the upcoming 2026‑27 ECHL campaign. The move caps a journey that has taken him from the icy ponds of his native Victoria, British Columbia, to arenas across three continents.
Early Success in the BCHL
Murphy first made a name for himself in the British Columbia Hockey League, where he skated for the Penticton Vees. In the 2011‑12 season he helped the Vees capture both the Doyle Cup and the RBC Cup, the league’s and national’s championship titles, showcasing his ability to lead a team to victory at a young age.
The following year he posted 70 points — 23 goals and 47 assists — in 50 games, a performance that earned him a seventh‑round selection, 185th overall, in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft by the Nashville Predators. Although he never cracked an NHL lineup, the draft nod signaled the league’s recognition of his offensive talent.
Murphy’s professional trajectory has been defined by consistency and clutch performances. During the 2023 season he helped the Steelheads reach the Kelly Cup Finals, contributing 43 regular‑season points and a league‑leading 20 playoff points, including a decisive role in the goal‑scoring department.
International Experience and Milestones
His career has spanned North American markets such as Maine, Kalamazoo and Idaho, as well as overseas stints in Norway, Slovenia and Slovakia. In November 2025 he appeared in his 400th career game against Tahoe, a testament to his durability and longevity in a physically demanding sport.
Murphy also honed his skills in the collegiate ranks, beginning at the University of North Dakota before transferring to Arizona State University. At Arizona State he recorded 20 points in 31 games during the 2016‑17 season, adding a developmental layer to his already robust résumé.
Now, as he dons the Thunder’s colors, Murphy brings a blend of leadership, scoring touch, and international flair to a team eyeing a deep playoff run. Fans can expect a veteran presence who knows how to translate regular‑season success into postseason impact.
