A Life Remembered
Veteran Indiana University sports broadcaster Joe Smith has died at the age of 78, leaving behind a legacy that shaped decades of Hoosiers coverage.
For 40 years Smith was a constant voice on IU radio, guiding listeners through football and basketball contests with a calm, professional demeanor that earned him a place in the Indiana Sportswriters/Sportscasters Hall of Fame.
His career began in television, where he produced pregame warm‑up shows from 1978 to 1982, and later hosted coaches’ programs that spanned three decades, bringing the behind‑the‑scenes world of college athletics into living rooms across the state.
In 1998 he was named Indiana Sportscaster of the Year, and in 2003 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame, followed by a 2021 honor that placed him in the Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame.
Smith also served as sports director at WGCL‑AM 1370, now known as 98.7 The Zone, and although he retired from the IU Radio Network in 2022, he remained on the airwaves until his final days.
He is survived by his two children, Jeff and Jamie, and six grandchildren, who carry forward the values of dedication and joy that defined his work.
Colleagues and fans alike remember his professionalism, his infectious enthusiasm, and the way he connected with listeners, making every game feel like a shared experience.
