A hometown hero takes the reins

DeAndre King, a Vicksburg native and former player, has been named assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for Morris College’s women’s basketball team, the Lady Hornets, beginning this October.

King’s high school career at Vicksburg High School, where he played under legendary coach Dellie C. Robinson, culminated in a state championship appearance during his senior year, showcasing his talent early on.

After graduating in 2014, King continued his basketball journey at Hinds Community College before playing semiprofessional games in the American Basketball Association, experiences that deepened his understanding of the sport.

His coaching résumé includes stints at Vicksburg Junior High School, Porter’s Chapel Academy, Shorter College and Southeastern Baptist College, and in 2022 he earned the Vicksburg Daily News Junior High Girls Basketball Coach of the Year honor for leading the Lady Eagles to a 17‑7 record.

Under head coach Jenone Bell, King will focus on player development and recruitment, bringing a blend of local insight and competitive experience to the Lady Hornets as they prepare for the upcoming season.
