The Viera High football program enters the new season riding the momentum of a seven‑win campaign that ended with a district runner‑up finish and a playoff run that saw the Hawks capture their first postseason victory since 2020.
A large core of seniors returns, giving the team continuity on both sides of the ball. The offensive line, anchored by seniors Coby Wallace, Max Kukuljica and Sam Cardona with junior Tyler Wu, is expected to provide the foundation for a potent rushing attack.
Among the standouts is senior Duke Butler, who made history last year by becoming the first rusher in school history to reach the 1,000‑yard mark. Butler will share carries with sophomore Derek Schmadeke, and the coaching staff hopes to develop two 1,000‑yard rushers this season.
The defense also returns key contributors such as Daniel Jolly, who recorded six interceptions and 64 tackles, and Dillon Price, who tallied 72 tackles. Junior pass‑rusher Jason Harp added 10 sacks, while secondary players Brooks Stowe and transfer Jeron Collins from Titusville bolster the back end.
A test beyond state lines
The schedule presents a fresh challenge, as Viera will compete in a new district that includes out‑of‑state opponents. A marquee matchup is set against Catholic Memorial in West Roxbury, Massachusetts, the reigning Division 2 state champion coached by John DiBiaso. The game, long planned by the program, will include a team trip to Boston, with visits to the Freedom Trail and a college football game at Boston College.
Beyond the on‑field goals, the coaching staff aims to boost college recruitment, targeting four or five Division I prospects this year, while emphasizing player development for future success.
