A Historic Father's Day on the Diamond
On Father's Day, vintage baseball clubs from southeastern Minnesota gathered to play a series of one‑hour contests that strictly followed 1860s rules, offering a rare glimpse into the sport’s early days.
The three teams — Mankato Baltics, Rochester Roosters, and Fillmore Fungi — took the field in period‑accurate uniforms, using wooden bats and leather gloves while adhering to the original rule set that predates modern baseball.
Families, many with fathers and children side by side, watched the action from the stands, enjoying the nostalgic atmosphere as the games unfolded across the historic grounds.
Admission was set at a modest 25 cents, making the event accessible to the local community, and the proceeds supported youth baseball initiatives in the region.
The Rochester Roosters used the occasion to honor their late teammate Mike “Dynamite” Adkins, who had been a fixture at the annual Father’s Day event. Coach Greg “Cooper” Kraus noted that Adkins never missed the tradition, and the team dedicated the game to his memory.
After the final out, kids were given the chance to practice batting under the guidance of the players, sharpening their swing techniques in a hands‑on clinic that blended recreation with skill development.
The day’s festivities also featured coloring stations for younger participants and a display of live animals, adding a family‑friendly dimension to the historic baseball experience.
